気が付けば、あっという間に木曜島を離れる日に。

ここ数日の間で一番酷い嵐が島を襲う中、「ACRRM（豪州へき地医療学会）」の会長であり、ジェームズクック大学で准教授も務めるルース・ステュワート氏の自宅に招いていただきました。

 

ルースとは、今年1月に彼女が家族と一緒に来日した際に、成田と北海道でご一緒して以来の再会ですが、幸運にも今回、木曜島での最後の2時間を共有することができました。

 

当初、RGPJが提供する海外での3ヶ月間の研修は「見学のみ」とする予定でした。

しかし、昨日のプレゼンテーションの後、Thursday Island Hospitalの院長が、『RGPJの研修生に実際の診療を経験させたい』と言ってくださったことで、状況は一変。

 

今日、彼女の下を訪れたのも、その内容をより具体的に詰めるためだったのですが、ゲネプロの掲げるビジョンをしっかりと理解した上で紡がれる彼女の言葉や提案は、どれも力強く、また具体的なものばかり。

結局ルースは、我々が乗船するフェリーの出航時間が迫る中、家を出なくてはならない時間ギリギリまで粘って議論を尽くしてくれました。

こだわりのコーヒー豆とミルクで、1杯ずつ丁寧に淹れてくれたルースのカプチーノ。

まだその香りの余韻が優しく鼻孔をくすぐる中、ふと彼女が別れ際に口にした言葉が脳裏をよぎりました。

 

「的は絞られたね」

再び木曜島に舞い戻る日も、そう遠くはなさそうです。

 

 

Today is the day that we leave the island.

In the most terrible stormy weather in 4 days of stay, we luckily got invited to Ruth Stewart’s home.

 

We met her for the first time since Ruth and her family had visited Japan in this past January.

 

By the way, we planned to provide the RGPJ registrars with three-month “Elective Program” as a study tour at first.

After the yesterday’s presentation, however, the director of Thursday Island Hospital said to me:

 

“I would like the RGPJ registrars to engage in and experience the actual clinical examination here”.

His proposal changed everything. So, I visited Ruth to discuss and negotiate with her in order to make his proposal a reality in the near future.

Since she deeply understood the vision that Genepro had painted, every suggestions she gave me sounded not only powerful but also realistic and reasonable.

 

Eventually, I and Ruth have had many energetic discussion until the very last minute before I have to leave her home so as to take a ferry at the port.

 

“You succeeded in focusing only what you should do, today.”

It doesn’t seem that the day I will return to the island comes in the far future.
